Cone

A type of joint shaped like a cone, that is big on one end and tapers down to a small end with a crutch or filter. Their shape allows for a smoother burn so they don’t have to be relit. Pre-rolls bought in dispensaries are usually cones, made by filling a pre-formed cone with ground cannabis, and empty cones can be purchased and filled with ground cannabis of one’s choosing.

“I prefer rolling cones because they burn a lot more evenly.”

“I keep empty cones on me for rolling when I feel lazy.”

What is a cone?

A cone is a joint that starts small at the crutch or inhaling end and widens out to the tip. They are also referred to as “bats” because they look like baseball bats. The shape allows for a smoother burn and can hold more ground flower than a straight joint of the same length. The shape is also thought to improve the joint’s smokability by preventing plant oils from congealing too quickly. Cones are the universal standard for dispensary pre-rolls.

How to roll a cone

The production and sale of empty cones became popular as a response to people who can’t roll joints by hand and don’t want to deal with a hand roller. Empty cones can be purchased from a number of paper brands, including Zig-Zag and Raw, at dispensaries and smoke shops across the country.

To roll a cone, simply grind up some flower and pack it into an empty cone. Make sure the flower you’re packing is finely ground, as you won’t be able to shape it as you would a joint you roll. Use a tool such as a pen or dab stick to gently pack in the flower, and pack it in stages: first a little bit, then a little more, etc., until the cone is full.
